AFGHANISTAN FUNDRAISER
“Love Goes ‘Round the World”
This year, Feb. 12-13-14 (Valentine’s weekend, Thursday through Saturday), from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will be the second annual Big Canoe fundraiser for Afghanistan, co-sponsored by Bears Oh My! gift shop in Wolfscratch Village, at Big Canoe in North Georgia. Store owner Barb Maslyk donates all profits from the sale of Afghanistan goods to this fundraiser, and last year the benefit raised nearly $2,000.
Products from Afghanistan for sale at Bears Oh My include: pashmina shawls, embroidered cotton blouses, handwoven traditional silk scarves, and handmade soaps and body oil made at Arghand cooperative in southern Afghanistan. Lisa will also sell photographs of Afghanistan to benefit Pajhwok Afghan News.
The highlight of the fundraiser will be two handwoven Afghan wool carpets, one 36 by 50 inches and the other 31 by 45 inches, in lovely earth tones with elaborate patterns. They are currently on display at Bears Oh My. The first carpet will be sold to the high bidder in a silent auction; bids can be placed at Bears Oh My or via email to Lisa. The second carpet will be raffled off, with tickets selling for $5 each or a discounted book of five tickets for $20.
To donate, purchase or bid, please see the Afghanistan galleries on this web site, or contact Lisa directly.
